What to do when movers are late?

Moving day tipsApril 16, 2019

It sure is nice when a moving project goes as planned. You find the right professional packing services Columbus and you organize and everything on time. Then the movers come over, pick up your possessions and transport them safely. Heaven. But, as it is in all things, this rarely happens. Having a carefree moving is a rare blessing that few people experience, even when working with the top movers. There are usually a bunch of things that can go slightly or even terribly wrong, and one of them is movers being late. So, to help you manage such a situation, we are going to cover this scenario in detail.

Movers are late to pick you up?

Ok, so you’ve organized your move, avoided moving mistakes, made a moving date and are waiting for movers to come and pick up your possessions. But then, the unfortunate happens. Your movers are late. What are you to do? Should you start screaming and freaking out? Should you start summoning the ancient Indian spirits to help you out? No, none of those. Just as the Spirit of Wind won’t help you out, neither will screaming and freaking out. Here is what you need to do.

Step 1: Don’t panic.

Even though your situations seem dire, in reality, it doesn’t have to be. But, in order to deal with it, you first need to relax. Take a deep breath. Give yourself a couple of minutes to recuperate and calm down. This doesn’t mean that you have to accept the situation. All this means is that you need to get your head straight so that you can properly tackle the next step in dealing with late movers.

Do not panic if movers are late.
The last thing you need to do, when movers are late, is to panic.

Step 2: Contact the moving company

The first thing to do is to contact the moving company. In most cases, the reason they are late has nothing to do with them. Road work, traffic jams, and car accidents can all cause your movers to be a bit late for pickup. And, if that is the case, you movers will be late a couple of hours at worst. This shouldn’t pose too much of a problem unless it is a military moving project. But, if you are in a really tight spot, you need to explain this to your movers. Only if they completely understand your situation will they have the proper motivation to hurry up.

Step 3: Contact local last-minute movers

And if, on the other hand, your movers are going to make a more significant delay, you might consider hiring new ones. Sometimes moving companies can reschedule your relocation without notifying you. This usually happens because someone simply forgot to mention the new plan to you. Although this is rare, it does happen. And, if you’ve had the bad luck of it happening to you, you need to organize. At that point, you can do little with the current movers. They might be able to rush your relocation in the next couple of hours, but this can be difficult. You can also try to find different movers that can handle the last-minute move. But, this also can be both difficult and costly. Either way, be prepared to argue and pay a bit more for your move.

The moving company is late with delivery

The other situation where movers are late is when delivering your items. This can be difficult to handle, but it is usually easier than when movers need to pick up your possessions. Again, the key point here is not to panic. You are probably already stressed out from moving, and adding additional stress will simply wear you out. So, if it happens that the movers are late with delivering your possessions, here is what you need to do.

Step 1: Contact the moving company

Again, call the moving company. Delays are usually not a big deal and more often than not you will only have to wait for a few extra hours. But, if the movers are going to be late more then that you need to be aware of it. Some shipments may get lost, or a moving company may even try to scam you. If this is the case, you need to start dealing with it right away in order to salvage as much as you can. But, let us first deal with the more benign reason for movers being late with delivery.

Step 2: Make adjustments

If your movers have run into trouble and are going to be late a day or two, you need to make adjustments. It is always advisable that you pack a handbag to carry with you when moving. In it, you should have a change of clothes and all the daily hygiene items you might need. If you were not aware of this, and have not packed such a bag, you need to go out and buy them. Furthermore, you might need to get an air mattress, if you have no bed or sofa in your new apartment. All in all, you should try to make your new apartment habitable for the next couple of days.

You should always have a personal handbag when traveling.

Step 3: Contact the insurance agency

On the other hand, if your movers are going to be considerably later, or are demanding more money, you need to take legal action. Talk with your insurance agency and with an attorney in order to figure out what to do. If you were careful when signing a moving contract you will be able to punish your movers for their lack of professionalism. Furthermore, even if you choose not to punish them, the mere threat of prosecution is bound to make them hurry up and offer some kind of reconciliation deal. All in all, you need to be aware of what your movers are legally required to do and in what span of time.
